Chateau Marmont, Los Angeles, United
States
by Sarah
Bromley
Location:
Chateau Marmont is secretly perched in a curve above Hollywood's Sunset
Strip, tucked into the hillside which gives it amazing views and unparalleled
privacy, yet you are still only moments away from all the hustle and bustle
of LA. Chateau Marmont is modelled on the Chateau d’Amboise in France's
Loire Valley where the late Leonardo da Vinci lived. This gothic hotel
is dripping with history and has hosted every celebrity worth mentioning
since the 1920’s including Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe, Nicole Kidman
and Leonardo DiCaprio - just to name a few. The place has a majestic and
charming feel with tall dark wood doors contrasting against the more remote
and secluded areas in the surrounding grounds.
History:
Built in 1927, this hotel was originally built to be Hollywood's most fashionable
residence and constructed as an earthquake proof hotel, outstanding over
five earthquakes without sustaining any major structural damage. Due to
the depression, the hotel was changed to a hotel in 1933 and has since
then been taken over by celebrity hotelier Andre Balazs in 1990, bringing
the hotel back to it's former glory changing it enough to remain current
but carefully avoiding to lose what it once had. The Hotel is decorated
with rare antiques and Persian rugs scavenged from local mansions, attracting
many artists and dreamers who came out to live the Californian dream.
Rooms
and Suites: Each of the sixty-three rooms, cottages and bungalows are
timelessly elegant and the generous room sizes show that the Chateau was
designed to be apartments, not a hotel. No two of the antiques-filled accommodations
are alike, yet they all have a gothic and romantic feel. Each room is extravagantly
completed with a kitchen and fridge instead of a mini bar and the walls
are all completely soundproof. The bathrooms are a carefully restored version
of the thirties originals wherever possible. Privacy is an advantage: you
can pull off the Strip into the hotel's garage, disembark under cover and
take the lift straight from garage to your room without being seen except
for whoever celebrity is in the lift.
Restaurants
and Bars: The stylish Bar Marmont is a Hollywood ‘hotspot’ and provides
a low key and intensely romantic atmosphere with sumptuous rich earthly
colours, dark wood terrace and dull amber lighting. The atmosphere is intoxicating
and attracts the most stylish and beautiful crowds. The restaurant is a
formal private dining room which feels more like intimate dining in a grand
country house than in a formal restaurant. You can choose more of casual
dining setting by sitting outside in the elegant courtyard gardens, where
you will find a scattering of French café tables by candlelight.
Executive chef Carolynn Spense, formerly Chef de Cuisine at The Spotted
Pig in New York, has conceived a hearty menu with European influences,
in keeping with the overall theme of the hotel.
Sport
and Spa: Castle-like arched walkways and painted ceilings will lead
you to the outdoor classic oval pool which is surrounded by nine Spanish-style
1930’s haciendas and views to impress. The pool is heated and is encircled
by manicured gardens and stylish sun lounges. The fully equipped gym has
been recently refurbished and is hidden away in the air-conditioned attic.
